David Jones has been with the City of New Haven since 1998 and was appointed Superintendent of Utilities effective January 1, 2005 . The Superintendent of Utilities for the City of New Haven has a full array of duties and responsibilities relating to all different facets of the infra-structure for New Haven .
This includes coordinating, planning and organizing the maintenance of the water, sewer and street departments; working with the Engineering Department and Planning Department and responding to concerns and problems that arise from routine activities of the departments, both public and private. Additionally, the Superintendent plans, organizes and coordinates daily activities for fifteen (15) full-time and two (2) part-time employees including seasonal and daily utility projects such as snow removal, leaf pick up and water and sewer line distribution maintenance and repair. Also oversees the fleet and equipment maintenance and purchases as well as employee hiring recommendations in the Utility Department.
The Superintendent also assists the Fire Department, Police Department, Park Department, and the Engineering and Planning Departments as needed, as well as the local New Haven Chamber of Commerce and Festival Committee. The Superintendent works closely in conjunction with the City Council and Board of Public Works & Safety and works directly under the supervision of the Mayor of New Haven.
It is the overall responsibility of the Superintendent to respond as quickly as possible to the needs and concerns of the citizens of New Haven regarding public safety in water, sewer and street issues, as well as to provide an aesthetic and comfortable atmosphere in which to live and raise families.
